Ugadi is the ‘new year’ for states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. ‘Yugadi’ (Yuga: ‘era’ + Aadi: ‘beginning’) is the other name for this. The festival is celebrated in spring season.
One distinct feature of the celebration is a dish called ‘Ugadi Pacchadi’ which is made of 6 ingredients that give 6 different tastes (shadruchulu) , to signify that life is a mixture of flavours. The dish consists of raw mango, neem springs, salt, jaggery, tamarind paste and chilli. The dish is the first thing to be tasted on Ugadi and it is believed that the first taste you get is how the rest of your year is going to be.
Each year has a name and there are 60 such years which keep repeating cyclically. The 60 Ugadi year names are as follows:
